Beginner's Guide to the Cigar Ritual

For over two decades, Revolucion Cigars has transcended the traditional cigar shop, establishing itself as a cherished sanctuary for both seasoned aficionados and curious newcomers alike.

As you venture deeper into the world of cigars, it's essential to recognize that cigar smoking is more than just lighting tobacco; it's an intricate ritual, a harmonious interplay of flavors and experiences that elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary.

The Ritual and Community of Cigar Smoking

Every puff of a cigar has a story to tell, and each aroma transports you to a different world. But what truly makes this experience memorable is the company you share it with

Our Yaletown shop, Revolucion, isn't just a place to buy cigars. It's a gathering spot, a place where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and the ritual of cigar smoking is celebrated.

Mastering the Basics: Cutting, Lighting, and Puffing

Before you light up, it's crucial to master the basics. The quality of your cigar cutter can significantly impact your overall cigar smoking experience. Here, we break down the differences between a subpar cigar cutter and a high-quality one.

    Good VS Bad

Why Invest in a quality cutter?
    What makes a cutter bad?
    • Sharp Blades: High-quality cutters feature razor-sharp blades that provide a clean and precise cut, ensuring the cigar's wrapper remains intact.

    • Consistent Cuts: They offer a consistent depth and angle of cut, leading to an even burn when the cigar is lit.

    • Durable Construction: Made from premium materials like stainless steel, a good cutter is built to last and can withstand regular use without dulling or breaking.

    • Precision Engineered: They often have a well-defined opening that allows for the perfect cut, preserving the structure of the cigar.

    • Ergonomic Design: A high-quality cutter is designed with the user in mind, ensuring a comfortable grip and smooth operation.

    • Blunt Blades: The blades are often not sharp enough, leading to a jagged cut. This can cause the wrapper to unravel or tear, ruining the cigar.

    • Inconsistent Cuts: A poor-quality cutter might not provide a consistent depth or angle of cut, leading to uneven burning of the cigar.

    • Poor Construction: Made from inferior materials, these cutters are more prone to breaking or becoming dysfunctional after a few uses.

    • Lack of Precision: They might not have a well-defined opening, leading to over-cutting or under-cutting the cigar cap.

      Lighting: Toasting, not Burning

Lighting a cigar is truly an art form. It's not just about igniting the cigar; it's about achieving an even burn, which is the key to a perfect smoking experience. Think of it like the delicate art of toasting a marshmallow over a campfire. In both cases, patience is your ally, allowing the heat to work its magic.

      lighting a cigar

      • Tip 1 - Hold your cigar above the flame:  Ensuring your cigar is close to your flame, but not directly touching. This proximity allows the heat to warm the tobacco without scorching it.

      • Tip 2 - Avoid Direct Exposure: Direct exposure to the flame can cause the cigar to burn too hot, potentially leading to an uneven burn or altering the intended flavors of the cigar. If you ever find the flame touching your cigar, don't panic. Your cigar isn't ruined. Simply pull it away, let it cool for a moment, and then continue the lighting process.

      • Tip 3 - Rotate!:  Just as you'd rotate a marshmallow to get that perfect golden-brown exterior, you should also rotate your cigar when lighting it. This ensures the tip is evenly heated, creating a uniform burn from the start. As you rotate, watch for the development of a glowing ring around the cigar's tip. This is a sign that the heat is being distributed evenly. You'll also notice the edges of the cigar turning a dark, almost blackened hue, indicating it's ready to be enjoyed.

For the purest experience, we recommend using a torch lighter. These lighters provide a clean, hot flame that lights the cigar without altering its essence.

We can recommend the   Zippo Double Torch Lighter.

Once the glowing ring has formed around the cigar's tip, it signals the time to take your first draw. Gently bring the cigar to your lips, and take a slow, deliberate puff. As you draw in the smoke, observe the ember. It should burn evenly, illuminating the foot of the cigar with a consistent glow. This even burn ensures that you're tasting the cigar as it was intended, without any overpowering bitterness or harshness.

Our team member, George, shares his tips for puffing on a cigar:

“If you puff a cigar too hard, too frequently, and or too fast, the front of the cigar where the cherry is gets too hot and you burn the flavours of the tobacco leaf.

Slowing down, taking light puffs and giving time between puffs, about 20-30 seconds, even a minute between puff sessions is optimal.

Everyone is different and everything is personal preference, but this is my favourite way to smoke, slow and steady.”

      Adjusting the Burn

If you notice an uneven burn, don't fret. It's not uncommon and can be easily corrected. Simply use a flame to touch up the areas that aren't burning uniformly. This will help in reestablishing an even burn and ensuring a consistent flavor profile.

Blowing gently on the embers can also aid in achieving a smoother, rounded ash. This not only enhances the visual appeal but also indicates a well-lit cigar.
