History of Movember

Did you know……

Since 2003, there have been 4,027,688 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas that participate in this global awareness campaign, 574 million dollars raised,  770 men’s health projects have been funded and 21 countries around the world officially take part in “Movember”, to support men’s health. Movember officially launched in Canada in 2007.

Two mates from Melbourne, Australia, encouraged their friends, with the help of a friend’s mother, who was raising money for breast cancer awareness, to grow a Mo. They sent around an email titled “Are you man enough to be a man?” and found 30 men willing to take on the challenge. They designed rules and guidelines, which are still in place today and charged each man $10 dollars.

The first 30 Mo Bros grew their moustaches with such enthusiasm that in 2004 a formal concept was created that participants would grow for a cause. After much research into various men’s health issues they decided that Prostate Cancer was going to be their cause.

That year, Spain and the UK  joined to become the first international Mo Bros. With 450 participants now, they were able to raise AUD $54,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PFCA). This very first Movember cheque was the largest that the PFCA had ever received.

In 2005,  the Urchin team formed, founders Travis (Trav) Garone and Luke Slattery, along with JC ( Justin Coghlan) and Adam Garone.  They created a new campaign with the concept ” Give Prostate Cancer a Kick in the Arse” and a formal agreement between Movember and the PFCA was made, making them the first official men’s health partner. That year 9,315 Mo Bros raised AUD 1.2 million for the PFCA.

In 2006, the co-founders established an official Australian Charity, the Movember Foundation. The campaign used to be managed on evenings and weekends but had grown so big that the Movember Foundation had to hire their very first employee. Luke Slattery also developed Movember’s official tagline: Changing the Face of Men’s Health. Depression was also on the rise in Australia that year so the Movember Foundation took on Beyondblue” as their second official Men’s health partner.

New Zealand joined in 2006  and partnered with the Prostate Cancer foundation of New Zealand. Small unofficial campaigns were also run in the UK and in Spain. A total of 56,129 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas in Australia and New Zealand raised AUD 9.3 million dollars.

In 2007, the news spread. The enthusiasm of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas from around the world was growing in popularity. The co-founders decided to grow the campaign. In an effort, Adam moved to LA to help grow the US and Canadian campaigns, in partnership with the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Prostate Cancer Canada. JC helped grow the UK Campaign and partnered with Prostate Cancer Charity and Luke continued to run the Australian and NZ campaigns.  There were 134,171 participants that year that raised 21.5 million.

Now there are over millions of supporters world wide. What once started as a simple concept to grow a moustache has  gained global popularity and has achieved great success to bringing awareness to men’s health issues and creating a strong foundation to helping Prostate cancer charities around the world.

Dunhill Laser Keyboard and Chassis Case

Alfred Dunhill has been associated with innovation for nearly 120 years – a theme continued this season with an amazing ‘laser keyboard’ featuring a unique Dunhill finish and a Chassis leather carry case, designed with the frequent traveler in mind.

This small black box with a discreet AD logo, connects via Bluetooth to devices such as smart phones and tablets (including iOS or Android) and projects a keyboard design onto any table or surface in front of you.

The super bright laser projection allows you to use a full sized keyboard while having your device arranged in front of you, simply as a screen.

The unit is able to instantly sense where you type with variables such as regional variation, sensitivity, brightness and volume easily adjusted.

At a touch of a button (on the keyboard), it can also be switched to multi-touch mouse functionality – ideal for manipulating images in a document.

The unit has a built in Lithium-ion battery which can be recharged via a USB cable connected to a laptop or
similar device. This is very simple to set up and use in almost any situation, making it ideal for the traveller.

It is presented in an attractive and durable Chassis case with a pocket for the charge cable.

This case also acts as a stand for a phone – making it easy to work on documents on a train or even in a coffee shop!

A Night in Havana!

Sizzle up your Saturday night with live dancers on stage, real cuban mojitos (awesome) and of course the appearance of El Grupo Cubano- Brisas del Palmar at the Vogue Theatre. There will be a dance floor and salsa dancers so be prepared for a great show on stage and off stage!

We can tell your first hand having experienced the Cuban Ballet of Don Quixote last May that this show is sure to be entertaining!  Paulo and I were amazed at the talent the Cubans shared.

The cradle of Cuban music, Santiago de Cuba, has fostered several notable musicians, such as the Buena Vista Social Club. It is also the home of El Grupo Cubano.

The lead, Rosel Lamoru, formed this group in 1999 and under his disciplined leadership El Grupo has become the pride of Cuba. They recently performed for the Pope during his Cuban visit.

Bassist Julio Avila, perfected his pizzicatos (plucking the strings) on an upright contrabass given to him by Vilma Espin, the wife of Cuban President, Raul Castro.

From 2003-2007 El Grupo Cubano played winters in Havana’s Bodeguita del Medio. Many will be familiar with this iconic club—the birthplace of the mojito and a favourite of Ernest Hemingway.

This performance in Vancouver will be the band’s only North American concert engagement.

See you there! Salud!

Jetsam Wallets

I first heard of Jetsam in New York while attending the gift show.  It was a pleasure to meet Laura the designer of Jetsam.  We are happy to be representing them here in Vancouver, BC.

About Jetsam Wallets Debut

Jetsam was inspired by the time-honored style of iconic male figures. I’ve taken historic masculine textiles and reinterpreted them for the future. It’s old-school haberdashery for the guy who doesn’t wear a suit.

The initial Jetsam line-up includes 4 editions of the classic 3-pocket billfold.

  • The Prepster edition features dapper patterns and traditional hues from reclaimed classic neckties
  • The Uncle Larry edition features bold patterns and bright colors from reclaimed retro 70s-era neckties
  • The Natty Professor edition features classic tweed herringbone from reclaimed vintage men’s jackets
  • The Spiffy Lumberjack edition features colorful plaids from reclaimed vintage shirts

I’m all about sustainability, so I’ve made Jetsam as eco-friendly as possible. Jetsam is a 16th-century term for unwanted material that was thrown overboard to lighten a ship’s load. Each Jetsam wallet is a product of unwanted or discarded materials, such as end-run fabrics, cast-off clothing and vintage textiles.

Each wallet also comes packaged in a recycled gift box, perfect for gift-giving.

Company History

Jetsam WalletsIn August of 2011, Jetsam™, a new line of eco-friendly wallets made from vintage menswear, made its debut. The roots of Jetsam lie in a handmade line founded in 2007.  It started off as a micro-enterprise, with all products manufactured in-house by designer and founder Laura Skelton. Inspired by the retro style of 70s men’s fashion, the Necktie Wallet® debuted that first year.  2009 marked the introduction of several new reconstructed wallet designs. After nearly four years of growth, the new Jetsam line continues to embody a commitment to sustainable and socially responsible practices, sourcing vintage and end-run materials and recycled packaging in addition to keeping production close to home, so you can feel good about what you keep in your pocket.

About the Designer

Laura SkeltonComing from a background in sustainable architecture, Columbia University graduate Laura Skelton is the founder and designer behind the new Jetsam™ line. Since her early teenage years, Laura has concocted refashioned accessories and clothing from vintage materials, roaming the aisles of thrift stores and costume departments for inspiration. When she’s away from Jetsam, Laura loves creating elaborate costumes and clothing from interesting junk. A dress she constructed entirely from the Sunday New York Times was recently featured in several international newspapers, and a handbag she crafted from an old childrens’ sleeping bag was published in the book Refashioned Bags. Laura currently lives in San Diego, where she enjoys competitive potlucks and brewing craft beer.
